Non abbiamo fatto in tempo ad archiviare Sacrifice, che The Weeknd lancia un nuovo videoclip, Gasoline, di fatto la opening track del suo concept album Dawn FM. Alla regia è chiamata la visionaria Matilda Finn, capace di prendere il testimone dai Cliqua raccontando il confronto tra la versione anziana di The Weeknd (che fa anche da copertina all’album,artisticamente curato dalla stessa Finn), col volto segnato dai rimorsi, e la sua versione presente, costantemente in cerca di emozioni forti, sesso e droga.
L’incontro-scontro fra i due avviene in una discoteca, autentico universo mentale in cui The Weeknd si muove nell’era post-Afterhours, dove avvenenti ballerini si muovono in una coreografia orgiastica, mentre, parimenti al precedente Sacrifice, dei rapidi flash ne rivelano la natura diabolica. La componente surreale viene dichiarata fin dall’inizio (le formiche di daliana memoria), per poi articolare un gioco di doppi (che in alcune soluzioni sembrano rimandare direttamente ad Us di Jordan Peele) e contraddizioni che si conclude con un brutale pestaggio da parte del giovane Abel: all’ascolto o all’aiuto, egli preferisce infatti la via della violenza.
